Surface-mode lifetime and the terahertz transmission of subwavelength hole arrays

چکیده
We measure the enhanced transmission of Terahertz radiation through a metal film perforated with arrays of subwavelength holes of varying hole size. By measuring transmission spectra in the time domain and comparing our experimental results to a rigorous modal-matching model, we are able to assess the relative contributions of resonant and nonresonant transmission channels. We see that the contribution of the resonant transmission becomes more important with decreasing hole size because the lifetime of the surface mode mediating the transmission is increased with reducing hole size. Using low-temperature measurements to control the nonradiative loss levels in our system, we show that losses limit the lifetime of the surface mode, thereby limiting the resonant transmission intensity for the smallest holes.

Resonant terahertz transmission in plasmonic arrays of subwavelength holes
A review of transmission properties of two-dimensional plasmonic structures in the terahertz regime is presented. Resonant terahertz transmission was demonstrated in arrays of subwavelength holes patterned on both metals and semiconductors. The effects of hole shape, hole dimensions, dielectric function of metals, array film thickness, and a dielectric overlayer were investigated by the state-o...

We present experimental results of the transmission magnitude and phase change of terahertz pulses through thin metallic films patterned with subwavelength hole arrays on silicon wafers. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy measurements reveal a sharp phase peak centered on the surface plasmon resonance. Correspondingly, and consistent with the Kramers-Kronig relations, the measured transmission ...

We study surface-plasmon-enhanced terahertz transmission through subwavelength metallic hole arrays of sub-skin-depth thickness. Dynamic evolution of surface-plasmon resonance in terms of array thickness is characterized by use of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in the frequency range 0.1-4.5 THz. A critical thickness of lead array film is observed, above which surface-plasmon coupling of te...
متن کاملSpoof surface plasmon polaritons in terahertz transmission through subwavelength hole arrays analyzed by coupled oscillator model
Both the localized resonance and excitation of spoof surface plasmon polaritons are observed in the terahertz transmission spectra of periodic subwavelength hole arrays. Analyzing with the coupled oscillator model, we find that the terahertz transmission is actually facilitated by three successive processes: the incident terahertz field first initiates the localized oscillation around each hole...
متن کاملElectronic control of extraordinary terahertz transmission through subwavelength metal hole arrays.
We describe the electronic control of extraordinary terahertz transmission through subwavelength metal hole arrays fabricated on doped semiconductor substrates. The hybrid metal-semiconductor forms a Schottky diode structure, where the active depletion region modifies the substrate conductivity in real-time by applying an external voltage bias. This enables effective control of the resonance en...
